The cold weather is here in full force and it’s time to start thinking about the tips and reminders to help us and our horses deal with these freezing temperatures. Towards the end of fall and early winter, it is important to evaluate your horse’s body condition. This can be done by using a weight tape, running our hands along the ribs and the hips, or having your veterinarian examine your horse. “Ideal” weight for each horse is to be able to feel the ribs, but not visualize them. Regardless, their blankets should be removed at least once a week to assess their weight and hair coat.
