Targeted Deworming

Due to the increasing problem of resistance to dewormers, we no longer recommend deworming all horses based upon a calendar date. We are also no longer advocating the use of daily Strongid-C.  Targeted deworming focuses on treating each individual horse with the appropriate dewormer at the appropriate time based upon fecal exams. Please click a link for more detailed information and remember that the following information is based on mature horses living in New England for the entire year.

REMEMBER: The best way to protect your horse from parasites is to limit his/her exposure to infective eggs. Once your horse deposits manure in the field it takes 48-72 hours for the egg to hatch and have the potential to re-infect your horse. If you remove manure from your field every 2-3 days, you can drastically reduce your horse’s exposure to re-infection.
