Pre-Purchase Exams

Close Up of Staff Checking Horse's Hoof

Buying a horse is a significant investment, and a pre-purchase examination (PPE) helps you make an informed decision by evaluating the horse’s health, soundness, and suitability for its intended use.

At Massachusetts Equine Clinic, our veterinarians provide thorough, unbiased evaluations tailored to each horse and buyer.

Every PPE includes a comprehensive physical exam, lameness evaluation (walk, trot, and canter), and oral, respiratory, and cardiovascular assessments, along with hoof evaluation and flexion tests. Additional diagnostics—such as radiographs, ultrasound, bloodwork or drug screening, endoscopy, and rectal examination—may be recommended as needed.

What is a PPE? A PPE is a detailed medical and orthopedic assessment performed prior to purchase. It is not a “pass/fail” exam, but an objective evaluation to identify risk and determine suitability for the buyer’s goals.

Goals of a PPE: Establish baseline health and soundness, Identify conditions that may affect performance, Evaluate risk of future injury or disease progression, Determine suitability for intended use, Provide objective documentation for buyer and seller

What’s Included: Physical and musculoskeletal examination, In-hand and lunge evaluation, Under-saddle evaluation (when applicable), Flexion tests, Diagnostic imaging (as indicated), Laboratory testing and specialized procedures (as needed)

Common Findings: Many findings are incidental and may not impact performance. These can include mild flexion responses, minor radiographic changes, hoof imbalance, old scars, or slight asymmetries. Our role is to help you understand their clinical relevance so you can make a confident, informed decision.
